PRODUCTION DESCRIPTION

The Master’s Music Company is seeking non-union actors, singers, and dancers of all ages and ethnicities for its upcoming production of the original musical HOPE IN THE HEARTLAND written by award-winning songwriter & singer, Chris Machen. This bluegrass musical, based on a true story, is set in during the Great Depression ca. 1932 featuring all original songs .

It’s the story of one young family’s struggle to survive incredibly difficult times, their strong faith, and the people and circumstances that infuse them with hope. It’s funny, heartfelt and challenging. Think “It’s A Wonderful Life” meets “O Brother! Where Art Thou?" with the Bluegrass feel of "Bright Star".

Understudies for the 4 children

JOHN CHARLES(PRECAST) Male, 30-45. Out of work father-carpenter trying to provide for his family. Strong, hopeful, with a deep faith in God, but melancholy. Always trying to shield his family from the depth of their poverty. Lyric baritone or low tenor (low B to high F), energetic dancer needs to be able to do jig/soft-shoe/tap.

VADA CHARLES: (PRECAST) Female, 25-40. Wife, mother, the “glue” that holds the family together. Strong positive, upbeat woman even in the midst of trials- loss of infant twins and an unexpected pregnancy. Buoys her husband and kids. Light dancing, waltz like. High alto or low soprano. Need a strong singer-‘Adele” type belter. (low G to high B)

WILLIAM WADE: (PRECAST) Male, 40-55. Wealthy oil-man, now bankrupt. Stumbles into the mission and though he’s as poor as the next guy, he’s very proud, condescending, but sad and empty. Life didn’t turn out the way he’d planned, his identity wrapped up in his wealth, now all that’s gone. His emotion range goes from sympathetic, to arrogant, to searching. A strong baritone (low C to high E). Light dancing, but needs to be able to do a basic jig/soft-shoe/tap

GABE HARBINGER: (PRECAST) Male. 40-60. Gabe is the angel Gabriel sent on mission to intersect with the other characters. He’s somewhat of a mystery man. Though the audience will pick up on his true identity during the show, the cast members really have no clue. He seems to know more about these people than he should. Gabe needs to be a strong and comedic actor able to take over a scene. He “holds court” as he tells the Christmas story in a very folksy way. Baritone or low tenor. (B-E) He needs to be a strong singer with some light dancing.

AUNT FANNIE HURST: (PRECAST) Female. 40-60. Boisterous, loud, a bit irreverent and funny, Aunt Fannie runs the mission. She’s one of the comedic character in the show, a combination of Ethel Merman & Rosanne who doesn’t mind poking fun at everyone yet, has a truly kind heart. Light dancing, mostly as a prop to the other dancers in the production number, Good News. But she must be a belter. Preferably a gutsy alto. (low A to high B).

BERNICE: child. 10-12. One of the 3 Charles children. Shy, (except when arguing with younger brother, Johnny) but wise beyond her years. She befriends William Wade, the oil-man, and teaches him much about life and faith. Light dancing with ensemble numbers. She sings a beautiful solo, No Place For A King, a new Christmas lullaby. (low B to high B)

NORMAN: (PRECAST) Male. 20-30. He’s the assistant to Aunt Fannie at the mission (and Ensemble). Not the brightest bulb in the box, but a big believer in Fannie and the purpose of the mission. Comedic character. Is chased all night by Francis, an “available” single lady. They open Act 2 with with a new duet about their “in progress” relationship. He also serves as the music leader and master of ceremonies. He kicks of the Christmas eve night with a hi energy song, Little Bitty Baby. (low D to high F). Baritone or low tenor and needs to be a strong dancer.

NAOMI & ELAINE: (PRECAST) Females. 16-28. The two unwed daughters of Aunt Fannie (and Ensemble). Put upon because Fannie wants them married. They have a duet Mama Says So that expresses their displeasure. They need to be strong singers and dancers. Medium range for both. They sing a duet that leads into a duet dance along with the ensemble. Naomi-alto (A#-A#) Elaine-soprano (A#-B).

FRANCIS: (PRECAST) Female. 20-30. A very “available” single lady at the mission (and Ensemble). She’s a friend to Aunt Fannie and the potential love interest to Norman, who wants nothing to do with her. She chases throughout the show. Both she and Norman are comic relief. They open Act 2 with a duet and describes the chase. Song comedic actor and dancer.

Must be high soprano. (mid C-high A)

*** All the following roles would audition with a song of your choosing.  This is a bluegrass show so sing accordingly. You may sing a song from the show if you desire.***

MR FORD: Male. 40-50. Mr. Ford is the man who owns the shack the Charles’ live in and serves them the eviction notice in Act 1.He is also the banker who has foreclosed on William Wades oil business loan. Stern, hardened, but somewhat sympathetic, too. He’s trying to take care of his family, as well. Non-soloist, but ensemble singer & dancer

JOHNNY: Male child. 7-9. One of the 3 Charles children. He’s a typical, mischievous, energetic boy. In some ways, his father’s favorite. Dad calls Johnny short. He’s wide eyed, happy to be anywhere. Though not a soloist, he needs to able to join family in a “Christmas carol moment” around the tree as well as some of the ensemble numbers.

CLYDE: Male teenager. 13-15. One of the 3 Charles children. Quiet, mature for his age. Deep love for his dad and mom even comes to their defense when the family is being evicted by a cruel landlord. Though not a soloist, he needs to able to join family in a “Christmas carol moment” around the tree as well as some of the ensemble numbers.

PATRICK: Male. 18-30. (and Ensemble). He’s an employee of the bankrupt William. Wade who bursts onto the scene in at the end of Act 1 to reveal a dead oil well has sprung to life. He’s a messenger boy, essentially.

  • 5 or more strong dancers who sing
  • 5 or more strong singers who dance
